How we got our name!
My parents met in New York City on Fifth Avenue. Mama was modeling for Coco Chanel and Daddy
was about to head off to war. Daddy
spied Mama as he was walking down Fifth Avenue and Mama was walking on the
other side of the avenue. He zig-zagged
across through the cars and fell into step with her. He said hello and asked if she would have a
cup of coffee with him. Mama was just
off work and headed home. She glanced at
him and thanked him but said she was tired after work. Daddy took off his hat and held it over his
heart and said, "Please Miss. I am
headed off to war and I would love to have just one cup of coffee with a
beautiful gal." Mama looked at him then a bit closer and smiled. She said she had time for just one cup of
coffee. They went to a close restaurant
and talked...and talked. After a few
hours they agreed to meet there for dinner the next day. By the end of the week they had been together
every day for dinner at the same restaurant.
While they were having their last dinner together before Daddy had to
leave on the boat for Europe Daddy wrote a note on a napkin and left it near
Mama's coffee cup. She noticed it and
picked it up and smiled as she tucked it in her purse. It simply said, I love you. Bill.
As they left the restaurant Mama was feeling a bit sad because she was
going to miss this handsome man who was such a gentleman to her. He brought her a rose every day for dinner
and they placed it in a water glass. He
would carefully wrap it in a paper napkin and remove all thorns for Mama to
take home. All of the roses were still
in bloom after 6 days.
Suddenly Daddy turned to Mama and took her hand in his. He dropped to one knee and asked her if she would accept his hand in marriage. He had
a box in his coat pocket that he pulled out.
He opened it and inside was a beautiful diamond ring from Harry
Winston. Mama looked into Bill's
gorgeous blue eyes and nodded yes!
Everyone in the restaurant was at the windows and they clapped, smiled
and cheered at her acceptance and their kiss! It is like
being in a Hallmark movie every time I imagine how romantic this proposal was!
